Anywhere, Anytime

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1 ESV

Is it just me or have you noticed that there are a lot of verses in the Bible that talk about God comforting us, giving us a sense of peace in our lives, or simply reaching out His hand to help us?

Sometimes life seems to just beat us down. It is almost like God knew those days would come (He totally did) and so to help us deal with them He gave the psalmist the inspiring words of Psalm 46 and other verses.

God knew there would be days when friends would abandon us. He knew there would be days when employees would commit mutiny. He knew there would be times when our boss would put undo and unrealistic pressure on us. He knew there would be days when we were within a hair of losing all hope whatsoever, when the clouds seemed so dark and dreary and when we would feel like the sun would never shine on us again.

And, yet the psalmist dares to tell us that, "God is OUR refuge and strength, a very PRESENT help in trouble. Therefore we will not FEAR though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling." (Emphasis is mine.) He is our refuge when we are beat down and need a place to heal up. He will give us courage when we are afraid even when we think in our minds that we can't, God says WE can. Without Him we can accomplish nothing but with HIM we are unbeatable.

The world has seen its share of floods, tumbling and unsure oceans, and mountains that seemed so strong one day but the next were crumbling at our feet. Whether you have ever been in the middle of a natural disaster or not, I think that there are times in our lives when we feel like we have been picked up, tossed around, and slammed back to the ground. And yet, we if we know God, then we went through it with the knowledge that there was a refuge from the storm and a strength that surpasses all, an ever present help in all the times we have experienced need.

Do you believe it? What have you been in the midst of this past week? What are you facing that you are certain that you can't overcome or get through? What tragedy has fell on you lately that you never saw coming?

Let me suggest to you what a man wiser than I suggested to me a few weeks ago when I was going through a valley that I never thought I would see the end of, turn towards the Son, the true source of strength and refuge from the storms of life. He is always ready when we humble ourselves and come to Him. As it says in Psalm 34:4, "I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears." Don't worry about wearing out the promise that God gives us in Psalm 46:1. God is, was, and always will be our ever present help in time of need, a refuge from the storms that batter and beat us, and give us the strength to face whatever and whoever.
