Mistakes

Have you ever made a BIG mistake?

You know the kind I am talking about, a mistake that can change your life, a mistake that you never thought you would ever make? One that if you saw someone else making it, you said to yourself, "How could they do something so silly?" As I write these words I can promise you that I have made my share of idiotic and moronic mistakes in my 36 years on this earth.

When I make a mistake like this, more often than not, I am reminded of one of my favorite people in the Bible. David was a great man of God, so loved by God that God called him a "man after His own heart." Though David was God's chosen one, he made his share of mistakes. One of the most notable was his affair with Bathsheba. She was not his wife but he had a relationship with her that produced a child. And not only this, he sent her husband to his death in battle, basically committing murder to cover up his sin. God sent His messenger to confront David about his "mistake," which drove David to ask God for forgiveness for what he has done.

My friend, all sin is wrong in the eyes of God, there is not "pecking order" to sin in God's eyes, and one of the keys to being the person that God desires us to be is to know when it is time to repent for the wrong or sin in our lives. If you are reading this for the first time you might ask me, "What does it mean to repent?" Imagine that you are walking down the street and when you are half way down the block, you realize that you have went the wrong way. Do you keep going or do you turn around? Of course you turn around and head back the other way. Simply put, this is what you are doing when you repent and ask the Lord for forgiveness. You are admitting that you are going the wrong way and that you want to go the right direction.

David made some HUGE mistakes in his life, but he also make a HUGE change by coming back to God and repenting, asking that God make his heart pure again and that He renew his spirit. David asked God to change his heart so that he would not make this mistake again. In asking God to renew his spirit, David asked God to renew the part of himself that would keep him from making this mistake again. The spirit is the conviction that lets us know when we are doing something that is wrong in the eyes of God.

My friend, not one of us will ever be perfect, but when we know that we are on the wrong path or headed down the wrong road, we need to make a decision to change directions and repent so that we can continue on with the Lord down the right road.
