Ride It Out

"Be still and know that I am God!" Psalm 46:10 ESV

Where I live in Alabama we all know when our local meteorologist Mr. James Spann, takes off his coat and is down to his suspenders it is time to find a safe place to hide because things are about to pop off. He uses words like "Conditions are beginning to deteriorate."  When you hear those words come from Spann's mouth you know the storm is close.

It is in those moments, when you find yourself powerless to do anything to stop the storm or fix the conditions, that moment all control is out the window, that we have to simply remember who it is that we place our trust in. The Psalmist tells us in chapter 46 verse 10, "Be still and know that I am God!" We have to stop, take a deep breath, and turn our eyes toward the God who is above everything. In the midst of all the chaos we just have to "Be still!" Really?

When you and I have an eternal perspective, which our relationship with Jesus Christ assures us, we know that He is forming the picture that we will eventually see. It is the big picture of our lives in the scheme of eternity, written during the storms that we are currently facing.

We have all been in the eye of the storm and I am sure that there are some that will read this that are there right this minute. Conditions deteriorate and then we are blindsided. One minute dad is in his office and the next you get a phone call telling you he is having a heart attack. One day you get a great evaluation from your boss at work and the next you get a pink slip. One moment you get a phone call telling you that there has been an accident. Someone you love and care for is fighting for their life and may not make it. One second you are calm and under control and the next everything that stitches your life together breaks loose.

Get the picture?

Yet through all of these events there is one constant. God remains a safe place to hide, He is ready to help when you need Him. That is the big picture. When conditions begin to deteriorate and everything begins to spin out of control, God offers the eternal and everlasting calm that quiets our hearts and is a life preserver when we are drowning.

No matter where we are or where we go, God is always there. He is always calm and always in control, especially when we aren't and can't be. No matter what storms are spinning around you, be reminded that the conditions of God are always bright and sunny and calm.

In the midst of whatever storm you face, always take shelter in God. All you have to do is quiet your heart before Him and He will show you just exactly how mighty He really is.
