Committed

“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” 2nd Timothy 4:3-5 ESV

One of the greatest leaders of the 20th century was Sir Winston Churchill. His first speech as Prime Minister of Great Britain was delivered in the face of a dangerous and volatile situation. Hitler's Nazi army were rampaging across Western Europe with their sights set directly on Churchill's home and his people. On May 13th, 1940, Churchill addressed the British House of Commons:

I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat....You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in once word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival."

Then later on June 4th, 1940, Churchill would help cement the resolve of the British people in their commitment, courage, and hope against the tyrant Hitler:

"We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end....We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."

Two weeks after that speech Mr. Churchill was overheard to say, "Let us therefore embrace ourselves to our duties and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour." England's worse times were turned ultimately into its best. The people refused to give in and in that commitment overcame tremendous obstacles. They believed they could prevail, stayed the course, and ultimately achieved victory.

The last 48 hours we have seen a cowardly act perpetrated by man that possessed only hate in his heart. There are those in this world that would see us all murdered simply because we don't believe as they do. While I don't agree with the lifestyle choices of the men and women that were gunned down in the name of a religion that claims to be peaceful, I can't abide those that speak out of hate. As a Christian we are called to serve ALL. We aren't called to separate them by their lifestyle choices or the color of their skin. We are called to be the loving arms of Christ and show the true heart of the church everywhere we go and in everything we do.

Our world doesn't want to hear the truth of the Gospel or the teachings that come with it. It is not my job to condemn anyone but it is my job to share what God lays on my heart. My God doesn't give me a message of hate. But God tells me through His word that I will face all sorts of trials and tribulations. And there will be people that try to pull me in different directions that I know are not the way God would have me go. It is during times like these that we need to hold on the God and to His word.

If all else fails stop and ask yourself the simplest question you could ever ask: What Would Jesus Do? How would He react to the situation that you are facing? How would He handle the events of the past weekend?
