Understanding Vision

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding." Proverbs 3:5 ESV

Have you ever driven through a heavy fog or a blinding snow storm? How well could you see? Three feet in front of you? Five feet? There is nothing quite as unnerving and frustrating as not having a clear field of vision. All aspects of life can be hampered by a lack of vision. Physical vision will limit the opportunities that you have in relation to the kind of activities that you can participate in. But the vision I am talking about isn't the physical kind. The vision I am writing about is a the vision for the future.
Each of us has a unique vision and purpose for our lives given to us by God. He wants to bring glory unto Himself through our lives. Understanding God's vision is completely different from our own vision. When I make plans I want everything planned out and laid out so that I can clearly see what it is I am trying to accomplish.

Think back when you were a kid and your family went on a trip. Your father probably mapped out the trip, he knew where you would start and where it would end up. He planned ahead where you would stop along the way and exactly how long the trip would take. Many of us plan out our lives exactly the same way. We have to know what we are doing and where we are going all the time. And if we get lost we simply use Google Maps to help us get back on track.

We all try to plan out in advance and want to know all the details in advance; we demand the answers before we even begin the journey. We want to work where we want to work and make the amount of money we want to make. We set goals for ourselves that often times are contrary to what God want's for us. We want immediate and instant gratification in all things. God doesn't work this way. He doesn't reveal His vision for our lives all at once. He reveals His vision when He knows we are ready and able to adequately receive it.

The key to this is our being willing to follow His lead. He will provide everything we need to accomplish His purpose but we have to stick to His map. We will most certainly encounter obstacles and detours along the way, but we can have faith in the knowledge that His vision for our lives will ultimately succeed.

We have to lay aside our plans and trust in His vision for our lives. We have to do as Proverbs tells us and trust in the Lord with all our hearts. Leaning on our understanding will lead us to make rash and often incorrect decisions.
