Refuge

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling." Psalm 46:1-3 ESV

Is it just me or have any of you noticed that there are a lot of verses in the Bible that mention God comforting us, giving us peace, or helping us? (Coincidence? I think NOT!)

Sometimes life seems to just beat us up. It is almost like God knew those days would come, (He did!) and so to help us deal with them, He inspired the psalmist to write the words of Psalm 46.

He knew there would be days when friends would abandon us. When our family members would let us down. When the people we thought we could count on would be nowhere to be found. He knew there would be days when we were within a whisper of losing all hope and simply give up to the waves and waves of problems that were building in our lives.

And what does the psalmist tell us? I like to think he is standing on a mountain top screaming it to anyone who will listen, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling."

The world has certainly seen its share of rising waters, roaring oceans, and mountains crumble all around us. Whether we have been in the midst of a natural disaster or not, I think if we reflect on our own lives, we would admit that we have experienced plenty of rough sailing and storms of all kinds in our lives. But yet, we went through them knowing God is there to be our refuge and strength. He is the ultimate and ever present help in the time of our most dire need.

The question you have to ask yourself is a simple one: Do I believe it? Think back to your last "crisis," what did you seek out to help you through it? What are you facing right now that seems so insurmountable that you can't face it? What tragedy have you faced in your life? Did you see it coming or did it blindside you?

I am saying this as much to those that read this as I am to myself: Turn to the One who truly is our REFUGE and STRENGTH and always there and ready to help in times of trouble. If we will turn to Him, He will calm and free us from all our fears. God is and will always be our refuge and strength. That is something that we can NEVER wear out. No matter what we face He will always be there with us.
