Toxic

I know a few families who were among the thousands of Americans who have had houses built using drywall manufactured in China. They didn't know at the time the home was built and didn't even know that was something they should be concerned about at first. For one family in  particular, their first sense of a problem was when a large bulge appeared in their hall bathroom wall when it got wet. The family considered just patching it but instead they called a contractor to come out and look at the problem. They wanted to make sure that the leak, if that's what caused it, hadn't spread anywhere else in their new home.

When the contractor cut into the sheet rock to look at the problem, he found the damage was worse than originally thought. It was in the entire bathroom, in fact, it was throughout the entire house.

It seems that this particular drywall made in China absorbed water and would begin to expand and doing so produced toxic fumes. After it was all over they ended up having to tear the whole house down, as well as throw out all of their furniture and almost everything else in the house. What was hiding inside the walls had poisoned nearly every thing in the home and their lives.

Why did I tell that story? Because sin can do the same exact thing in our lives. We can cover and paint over the "issues" or patch them together temporarily, but ultimately they will fester and bring themselves to the surface. Growing so large and toxic that we can't handle them on our own. They will threaten to destroy the foundation of our life.

What can fix this toxic level of sin in our life?

Staying rooted in God's word is a great start. The Bible helps us to see beyond what's on the outside to what is in our hearts, to question our motives, and start to cleanse us from those things we try to keep hidden. A verse that I have found helps keep me mindful of this is in Hebrews 4:12-13 "For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable."
