Commitment

If we look around it won't take long to find someone...The high school football coach that has been at the same school for decades. The older couple at church that just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The greeter at your church, that you probably don't notice like you should, that has been standing there Sunday after Sunday, holding the door open, with a welcoming smile, handing you your bulletin for as long as you can remember. And what unique quality separates all of these people? What makes them special? Simply put, commitment.

In a world that allows easy divorces, online cancelations, and a way to cancel a meeting by simply clicking an icon, true commitment is something that our generation has taken for granted for far too long. We expect people to keep their word, do what they say they will do, or be where they say they will be, only to end up disappointed time and time again. Let me say it this way: People ain't too committed to being committed.

But there are a good many people that show us every day what commitment looks like. There are dads who are deeply committed to their families, husbands that stay with their wives, and even people that are committed to their churches. And each time we show commitment, we honor Christ. A man that showed us what real commitment looked like. A man that left his home with His Father to take on our brokenness and shame. He was openly mocked and persecuted yet He remained committed to His task. God, Himself took on the nature of man and stayed committed.

He learned what it meant to be tired and hungry. The fact that the Word tells me Jesus was a carpenter shows me that He obviously knew what pain felt like. (Ever hit your thumb with a hammer?) And He ultimately died at the hands of the very people He came to save. And the strange thing was, at any moment, He could have stopped it all and said it ain't worth it. He could have packed His bags and been out as quickly as He came in. And He would have been totally justified in doing it. But He was faithful and committed to the task God gave Him. He would see it through all the way to the end. And our fortunes were forever changed as a result.
