Night And Day

“If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night," even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.” Psalms ‭139:11-12‬ ‭ESV‬‬

There are different kinds of dark in this world. There is the dark that you experience when you are in a big city and the ambient light doesn't allow you to see the night sky. There is darkness that is half lit from security lights when you are trying to sleep in a motel room. Then there is an all consuming type of dark. A type of darkness that wraps around you like a blanket. The kind that keeps you from seeing anything, even the hand in front of your face, when you are in a remote area at night. No distant lights from any houses, no blinking cell phone towers on a ridge in the distance, just dark. In the world we live in it is hard to find that kind of darkness anymore but when you do find it, it can consume you. There is an unmistakable vulnerability inside your heart when you are surrounded by that sort of dark, regardless how manly you think you are, deep down it's scary.

I think maybe that's what David was talking about when he said that there are times when a situation seems so dark that it overwhelms the soul, the mind, and even the body. But David knew something about the Creator, a truth with just enough of a glow to bring hope to the eyes of the heart.

Darkness can never overwhelm God because He created it.

Darkness can't hide the glory of God nor can it squelch His glorious ability to shine a light on the path so that we can follow Him even in the darkest of times.

Darkness isn't dark to God at all and no light is brighter to Him than the darkness is dark. They are one and the same to God. I know that I can trust what is true about God's grace, mercy, and His sovereign ability to provide for me, regardless of what I am facing. All of these things are true in the light and the dark, on the mountain and in the valley. God's ability to see has nothing to due with the ability to see with earthly eyes.
