When God Doesn't Make Sense

“Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor. You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.” Joshua 6:1-5 ESV

In the passage above, we find one of the most bizarre battle plans in the history of war. Although if we break it down it has one of the most important lessons we can learn i.e. Trust God even when His plan doesn't make sense.

If you honestly read this, you probably think that this must have been a natural thing for Joshua to do. But trust me it wasn't. I imagine that it didn't make any more sense to him back then than it does to us today.

Picture this, God takes Joshua aside and tells him that all they need to do is march around Jericho once a day for six days. Then on the seventh day march around it seven times and shout. OK, I don't know about you but I have never been able to yell or holler loud enough to make a wall fall down. I can imagine how Joshua was feeling and what he was thinking right at that moment.

But Joshua did exactly what God told him even though it sounded ridiculous to him and God gave the city over to Joshua and the nation of Israel. The walls fell down and Israel had the victory. All because Joshua listened to a crazy battle plan and then put it into action.

Every one of us will face our own Jericho at sometime in our life. God will tell us to do something that is completely contrary to all the common sense that we possess. But it isn't our job to make heads or tails about what we are being told to do. Our part is to listen and obey what ever it is that God is telling us to do. Especially when God's instructions don't make sense to us. Trust me when I tell you that God has a whole lot more experience winning battles than we do. Trust in Him and His plan.
