Value Of A Name

Do you know the meaning of your name? Each person's name has it's own special meaning, even though most parents these days don't pay much attention to it. There was a day when a name told much more about a person.

As a leader, you may not realize that just the sound of your name will evoke memories and emotions in others. As we go about our daily business, taking care of the bottom line and realigning our organizations, our names keep making a mark on those around us, whether you intend for it to or not.
In Proverbs 22:1-2 it tells us this, "A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all." We are told in the verses above that we should have the esteem of our good name rather than the esteem of a fat bank account or the kind of car that we drive. But do we lead in such a way that reflects a desire for a good name? Or do we place more value on our positions, power over others, and building wealth-all the while disregarding the name that carry with us?

Every single day you face a choice. Will you be genuine? Will you be authentic? Will you sacrifice your good name to get your own way-achieving your desired results with questionable means that appear to be justified the ends and step on the backs of others in the process?

When tempted by the enemy, Jesus also had a choice to make. He could have chosen food, personal safety, and power over obedience to the path that His Father has placed Him on. You see, choosing to focus on the name you carry will often times require making a sacrifice of immediate gratification. the reality is that what we gain in exchange is much more precious in the eyes of the Lord. Our long term success will prove to be the best decision we have ever made by protecting our name and the name of the Lord we serve.

"But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." 1st Samuel 16:7 ESV
