The Long Haul

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." Philippians 4:8 ESV

Every year, every football fan in the Southeastern Conference, lives with the expectation that their team will win. And if they previous season ended with a poor record or fans believe certain key players have played to lower levels than expected, they want to see a change. The local media and fan message boards will often add fuel to this fire. It is up to the head coach to recruit his guys and shore up his team every year in order to compete for years to come.

However, the best moves that any coach makes is often done without changing much of his personnel. Sometimes the biggest improvement in productivity comes from the players that are already in the system, they just needed a year to mature and grow, and becoming more familiar with they system that they are currently in. Those teams and coaches that don't do enough work in the offseason to prepare fail to live up to the expectations placed on them.

Just like the fans of these teams, we are like that in life. We always think that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. But sometimes the employees that you have already will be the ones that fit the best for the new position in your company. All you have to do is give them a chance to prove themselves.

Most often we find ourselves in settings where we don't need a major overhaul, we just need to simply readjust our thoughts and our focus to what is really important. The "greener grass" way of thinking can easily slip into many areas of your life - your marriage, friendships, your job. Instead of allowing the lies of our enemy to pollute our thinking and draw us away to the answers that lie outside of the current situation, we need to readjust and work on things that bring us closer to home, closer to our true center.

So next spring when your favorite team goes back out to practice for the new year, don't lose faith if you don't recognize some of the names or the stars on their recruiting forum don't add up to some of the other guys in the league. Sometimes the teams that focus on the growing aspect of their teams are the ones that make the greatest improvement and achieve lasting success. Don't jump ship too soon, settle in for the long haul.
