Listen

Anywhere you look in the Gospels and find Jesus, you will usually find the disciples. Once Christ left His home in Nazareth and set out to fulfill His earthly ministry, He selected a group of twelve men to go with Him, teaching them with parables and by His example.

Over the next three years, Jesus talked with them, and they talked with Him. With each conversation, each shared experience, He gave them an opportunity to find out more about Him, their selves, and each other. It was all preparation for what He wanted them to do with Him then and eventually with Him and His spirit working through them.

This group ate together, traveled together, and spent time learning from Jesus and teaching others too. Most days were very busy but there were quiet times too. Christ made time for His disciples and for others, and they made time for Him. It seems to me that this is not a bad example for each of us to take to heart in our daily lives.

The question each of us has to ask is: Are we ready to do this? When did you last spend time talking with your spouse about whatever he or she wanted to talk about? (Did you really listen?) I don't mean in the car or at a ball game or in the check out line in Walmart! I mean when is the last time you sat down, shut off the television, put down the iPhone or iPad, and really listened to what the other person, who is supposed to be the most important one in your life, has to say?

If you do this, be prepared! You may be in for a marathon of conversation because you have a lot of catching up to do!

Spend some quality time with the ones that you love! It will make a difference in your life and will make a HUGE difference in theirs!
